Read advertised prices as offers, not a market average
The price examples here were checked on 12 September 2026. VisualWeb’s Melbourne page advertises a one-page website for $1,699 plus GST, a small-business package for $2,490 plus GST and an online store from $4,990 plus GST. Check that provider’s current inclusions and terms directly. This is a deliberately small illustration of different scopes, not an independent survey or a claim about what most Australian agencies charge.
Write the scope before comparing quotes
Specify the number of meaningful pages, who writes the content, how photographs are supplied and which functions need to work. A brochure site and an online store are not equivalent products. A redesign may also need migration and redirects. Give each provider the same brief so differences in quotes are easier to interpret. Ask what would trigger a variation after the quote is accepted.
Separate build costs from recurring costs
A build price may exclude a domain, hosting, ongoing edits, software subscriptions and support. Ask for the total cost over a period that matters to your business, such as the first year and the following year. Check whether promotional prices change at renewal. Treat payment processing and advertising as separate operational costs unless the quote explicitly includes them.
Check what happens when you need a change
Ask who can update the website, what access you receive and whether support has a minimum commitment.
